Frequently Asked Questions
How many people are on the Tour?
Maximum of 25 people can be on an afternoon/evening tour. Around 8 people on a day group or weekend tour. This is a small group size which means you get to meet other guests and still be able to interact with your guide on a personal level.
Do I need any prior knowledge of geology?
No prior knowledge is required and your encouraged to ask lots of questions (there’s no such thing as a silly question) - the tour is designed for all levels of interest, from beginners to geology enthusiasts. Activities are designed for anyone who has a passion for nature and Scottish geology, natural history and culture.
What do I wear?
Scotland’s weather is famously changeable, and geology tours often take you off the beaten path—sometimes onto rugged terrain—so dressing appropriately will make your experience much more enjoyable.
Here’s what we recommend: 1. Layers, Layers, Layers!
The weather can shift from sunshine to rain in minutes. Wear lightweight layers so you can add or remove clothing as needed. A base layer to wick away sweat, a warm middle layer (like a fleece), and a waterproof outer shell are ideal.
2. Waterproof Jacket (and Trousers if Possible)
A breathable, waterproof jacket is a must—even in summer. Waterproof trousers are also great if we’ll be exploring coastal or highland areas where rain and wind can pick up.
3. Sturdy Footwear
Wear waterproof hiking boots or walking shoes with good grip. We often cover rocky, uneven ground, and proper footwear is essential for safety and comfort.
4. Hat and Gloves
Yes, even in summer! A beanie and light gloves can be lifesavers if the wind picks up—especially at higher elevations or exposed coastal sites.
5. Sun Protection
When the sun does shine, it can be surprisingly strong. Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a wide- brimmed hat or cap will help protect you, especially on reflective surfaces like rock or water.
6. Backpack Essentials
Bring a small backpack to carry extra layers, snacks, water, and any personal items. A dry bag or waterproof cover for your bag is a smart addition.
Seasonal Notes:
• Spring & Autumn: Expect mixed conditions—wet, cool, and windy. Dress warmly and always pack waterproofs.
• Summer: Milder, but still variable. Layers and waterproofs still apply. Watch for midges—long sleeves and repellent can help!
• Winter: Tours may be limited, but if you’re out, bundle up! Cold winds and wet conditions mean heavy-duty gear is necessary.
Are locations guaranteed?
Sometimes there are closures beyond our control such as for renovations etc. Locations cannot be guaranteed but we will always have an exciting back up plan.
Do I need to be fit?
Whilst we are not taking part in any extreme sports, parts of some tours include uneven footpaths, rocky terrain and steep inclines, so a reasonable level of fitness is required. You must inform us in advance at the time of booking of any pre-existing health conditions that may affect your ability to participate in any of the activities.
Who leads the tour?
The tour is led by Luisa Hendry (@scottishgeologist) who is a trained geologist.
What if I need the loo?
Some places we visit have public toilets nearby. However, the rural nature of where we are means toilets are not always available. There will always be opportunities to go in nature if required when we get caught short.
What happens if it’s raining?
Rain doesn’t stop a geology tour – we will still go out even in the event of inclement weather. However, in cases of severe weather, a walk may be postponed or cancelled. Please be prepared for the weather as Scotland is known to have 4 seasons in 1 day.
What happens if I’m late or miss the tour?
If you’re late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

trip leader as soon as possible. You will have access to a map and location information to locate

Are there toilets on the bus?

Can Itineraries change?
Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we’ll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.
Can I collect rocks and take them home with me?
Some areas allow responsible collection, but others are SSSI (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) protected. Sampling also presents additional risks such as hammering and potential exposure to hazardous substances therefore for that reason, Scottish geologist/Scot Rock Walks – Geology Tours Ltd does not promote sampling and would rather people didn’t take anything during the tour. More information can be found here on SSSI’shttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Site_of_Special_Scientific_Interest

Absolutely! Feel free to take pictures are share them with us.

If travelling in your own transport then yes – however, they must be kept on leads at all times during the activity and you must ensure they will not be a disruption.
