This tour will take you through some of Scotland’s ancient rock formations, revealing a geological story that spans over 600 million years. From ancient ocean floors that were originally laid down as sediments into the old Iapetus Ovean that shut during the Caledonian orogeny to Ice Age landscapes, Balmaha is the perfect location to explore the dynamic history of Scotland’s land, learn about the difference in geology between the highlands and the lowlands and why these rocks are so different either side of the Highland Boundary fault line.

Discover the Dalradian Supergroup - the ancient metasedimentary rocks of the highlands that are up to 800 million years old Learn how these rocks formed in deep marine conditions in ancient an ancient ocean before being foliated, compressed, deformed and transformed over millions of years during the great mountain building event 

🏜️ Discover the old red sandstone group  

A sequence of sedimentary rocks deposited by rivers back during the Devonian period after the two plates collided with each other and how to recognise sedimentary rocks.  

🌍 Explore the Highland Boundary Fault
